3 Reasons to Focus on Eternity and How to Do It

Discovering Jesus in the OT cover

Welcome to Session 11 of the Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament online Bible study, with Jean E. Jones! Both the Old and New Testaments tell us it’s vital to focus on eternity rather than earthly things. In Colossians 3:1-4, Paul gives three reasons we should do this, and in the surrounding verses, he tells us how.

Here’s how this will work:

  1. Watch this week’s video session above.
  2. Once you watch the video, answer the questions in the discussion section of this page. The questions relate to both the previous week’s study in the book as well as the video content. We hope these interactions will be both challenging and encouraging!
  3. After the video, we will let you know the personal study assignment for the next week in your Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament study book. That’s it!

Before Next Week

#1. The verses in Colossians hit home to me. In this new house here in Spring Glen We hired a contractor to build a large shop in our half acre back yard. He turned out to be a crook, and took the money and ran. I can’t think of a better time to put these verses into practice, in connection with that incident.
#2. Pg. 172, John 6:44 I’ve had this marked in my bible forever. It reassures me when the enemy tries to hit me with “you aren’t good enough to be a child of God”. and except for the fact that the Lord has drawn me to Him, I might not be. Reassures me that I am Who God says I am, and the devil is a liar.
#3. In our old house we had a fire. Our 3 yr. old grandson somehow started it in one of the bedrooms. The contractor that refurbished our house said that we even had live uncapped wires just hanging in the rafters and that we were real lucky we hadn’t had a fire sooner than we did. Our house was old, and they made many improvements when they repaired the house and they made it so much better. I learned that in spite of bad wiring and
little kids playing with matches, God still takes care of us and He sometimes blesses us in weird unexpected ways. I also was able to use that fire as a learning experience. I drove bus for Headstart for 13 yrs., and lived across the street from the school. After the fire, the school allowed us to take a field trip across the street and all the little 4 yr.olds learned WHY we don’t play with matches, Look what happened to busdrivers house!.
I also wanted to tell you that I made it to chapter 10 in “Why Does God Allow Evil”. Interesting and helped broaden my understanding in things I hadn’t thought that deeply about. I’m anxious to start “Immortal”. I also ordered “Sanctified Through The Truth, The Assurance of Our Salvation”. Hope it’s not too far over my head. The one I’m reading now, in the intro was miles over my intellect ( got a bit easier after I hit the chapters) Thank you for refering these books to us. A long time ago you refered “Fearless Prayer”, it was great, thanks.
