Discovering Joy in Philippians Online | Session 1

We are so happy to have you joining us for session 1 of the Discovering Joy in Philippians online study!

Here’s how this will work: Each week, come here and watch the video I post. It’ll last about 10 minutes. In the video, I’ll ask some questions for you to answer in the comments section below (I’ll repeat the questions below, too). Some questions are to help you get to know each other, while others are from your homework. Then, we’ll explain what the homework assignment is for the next week. Complete the homework in the book, Discovering Joy in Philippians: A Creative Bible Study Experience. The study will last twelve weeks (including this introductory session).

If you miss a session or can’t join right now, no worries. I’ll leave them up for you to complete anytime.

Questions to answer in the comments:

  1. What is your name?
  2. From where are you studying?
  3. What drew you to Discovering Joy in Philippians?

Before watching next week’s video…

Complete Chapter 1: Discover This Letter of Joy. Come back next week to discuss.

My name is Tammy. I am studying from Citrus Heights, CA, which is a suburb of Sacramento in Northern California. I am working on a degree at Biola University, and your husband, Dr. Clay Jones, is one of my professors. I saw your advertisement for this study on his Facebook page. He has shared a few things about you that lead me to believe we have some similar experiences. Recently, the last month, I feel as if God has been placing Philippians in front of me, so when I saw that your study was in Philippians, I felt a prompting that this was for me.

Great! Hope to meet you in a couple weeks. The on-line discussion format allows us to discuss some of the questions from the book. The first video introduces the book and asks everyone to introduce themselves. The rest of the videos will be about a particular chapter and the discussion will center around three questions from the book.

My name is Amy and I am in Calhoun GA, just a half hour north of Atlanta. I saw the book in the Christian Bookstore and I wanted to get it. I liked the creative aspect and I was looking for something on Joy because I am dealing with two estranged adult children, and I have had a tough time finding any joy because of it. I have been grieving them for years and I couldn’t pull myself out of it. I am already experiencing joy and I am only in the second chapter. It’s amazing! God is working through this book. It’s helping me tremendously. I look forward to working on it every day! I am so grateful to the authors.

Hi. My name is Cathy Nason and I live in McMinnville, Oregon. Having enjoyed Discovering Hope in the Psalms with Karla Dornacher’s study group, have been anxiously waiting for this Joy study 🙂 Delight (joy) has been my “word” for the year – as in Psalm 37:4, “Take delight in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” No matter the circumstances I can choose to delight in the Lord and He truly does fill my heart with joy — I am excited to see how much more so He will manifest this in my heart in this study!!! (Thank you Jean for fixing my newsletter issues so I could get here!)

My name is Rebecca Bradshaw. I live in a little rural canyon in Southern California called Reche Canyon.
I originally heard about this study from Karla Dornacher’s online FB study “Finding Hope in the Psalms”. I found her on Etsy and joined her newsletter after buying bookmarks from her site for the ladies in a community group I lead at church.
These are amazing bible studies. I find them very thought provoking. Jean, you write in a way that is great for a new christian and mature christian alike. Full of details I miss while reading on my own. You give great insight into the history and etiology of the words used. The artistic portion helps me to learn scripture in a brand new way that works for me. Unlike you I am very right brained 😂
Pam’s perspectives in the Choosing Joy sections are insightful and inspirational.
I am grateful to all three of you and already feel like I know each of you as close friends which is really mind blowing to me. Social Media for Gods Glory done amazingly well!
Thank you Jean, Karla and Pam for caring so much to share such a big part of yourselves to help strengthen us in Christ ! ❤️
    Warmly,

Hi, I’m Dianne and I live in Williamsburg, VA. This is a wonderful area to live, surrounded by historical sites and the beauty of the east coast of Virginia. I am retired, having been a church administrative assistant for 33 years as well as being an instructor for church ministry assistants through LifeWay.
I was so very blessed with the online study with Karla. It was timely as my husband experienced mini-strokes and after near death, miraculously healed. Living on the East Coast, the online study was at 9:06pm, a time when I could focus on my Father after an exhausting day. I look forward to this study and how God will use it in my life to bring and spread His joy, which is like nothing our world offers.

When I was talking with my girlfriends about what to do next… I started looking on Amazon and found the pre-order for the Joy in Philippians study. Defiant Joy is a book by Staci Elderidge that I got last fall, so it’s not my phrase, but I love it, have embraced it, and use it often! Especially in tough situations, I choose to embrace a Defiant Joy in the midst of trials that the world wants to use to destroy us.

When she mentioned Joy in Philippians, I knew this was my chance to join in from the start. I am a wheelchair user following a brain haemorrhage in 1997. I have prayed for healing and been prayed for many times, but seen no improvement in my condition. However I do always try to see the bright side of life, opportunities, not problems. Still ever hopeful that I will walk again. In the meantime there’s always room for more JOY! When this study is finished I hope to go back to Hope in the Psalms.

I learned of “Discovering Joy” from your “Discovering Hope” FB page. (I started that study, but put it on hold as we are working on a creative outreach Bible study at church using Discovering Hope. It will be half Bible study and half doing crafts, creative writing, drawing/painting, etc. I’m REALLY excited about the possibilities of reaching our community through this!)
Anyway – Pilippians is my favorite book of the Bible and I was very excited when I found out “Discovering Joy” was to be released a few days before my birthday! Happy birthday to me!!

It makes us authors feel like we’re sharing in the community.

And please tell us how it works with reaching your community–I really want to hear about that. I’m excited about the possibilities and am praying for you on that! I don’t have an online study for “Discovering Hope” on this website yet, but you can share in the FB page or email me.

Philippians is my favorite of the New Testament letters! God’s words through this letter have changed my life in so many wonderful ways. I can’t wait to hear what you share.

We are hoping to have the new guy in place this fall, so the study could start as early as the fall, but I’m guessing more like January. I struggle with depression and anxiety. I see others living a life going place and seeing the world and my husband and I are stuck taking care of everyone else. I am the only faithful Christian in my immediate family and struggle with worry about my loved ones souls. I know they are ultimately the ones who have to choose, but knowing they are living worldly lives saddens me and I worry A LOT! I need to find JOY that only God can give! May the Lord Jesus pour his joy and peace into your life. May you see the grand purpose he has for you. May your eyes glimpse the glories that await. May you know in an ever-increasing way the depth of love God has for you. <3

My name is Tetiana Ashley. I live in Vineyard, Utah. I found this Book in Amazon, and so happy to join your group. Thank you for helping us in discovering Joy. 5 Years ago I came to USA from Ukraine, former Soviet Union. When I was growing up, I had no knowledge about Who God is, it was prohibited by government. I was 15 years old when Soviet Union was destroyed, and it opened doors for evangelical christians. I was 15 years old when one man from USA with interpreter approached me on the street and told me that Jesus Christ loves me. I had never heard about God before, so I assumed that it was someone from USA, and I asked back, “how he can love me if he doesn’t know me’. The same night I went to service where I gave my life to Jesus Christ and it was start to a new life for me and all my family. I am 40 years now and so grateful to God for being with me in every day, guiding, teaching, comforting, giving joy and peace in every day of my life. He was my Provider in poverty, He was my Joy and Protector in my unhappy abusive 13 years marriage, He was my Comforter when I lost my Daughter, she died from cancer. And He was the One “Who does miracles”, when 7 years ago I met my now husband, wonderful man from USA, who was my customer in Ukraine, proposed me, and now I am here in USA, feeling like Cinderella, learning to live a life of happiness, freedom. There are many challenges I have to face here, in new country, being far away from all my family, but Jesus is always with me. When I am grieving or feeling lonely, or have fear and worries, I try to concentrate on God’s Glory, Power and Joy in His Presence. Looking forward to learning and practicing it with you. Thanks

Hi I’m Rhonda (Ronnie) King and I’m studying with y’all in Winona, MS. I did the Discovering Hope in Psalms while being full time caregiver for my mother, who had dementia among other health issues. That study and the interaction with you, Pam, and Karla, helped me through some very hard times. She passed away in February of 2019.
My whole life, like so many others, has been wrought with ups and downs, and many disappointments and struggles. But I persevere, though not always with joy I’m afraid. I want to change that though and can hardly wait to get started on this new study. Many thanks to you all for these beautiful Bible studies and I hope you will continue with many more.

Welcome, Ronnie! The caregiver season is a tough one, especially when dementia is involved. We were in that season up until 2 years ago. We have just one elderly parent left, but he’s still able to care for himself. I’m thankful to God that Discovering Hope in the Psalms and the interaction helped you in that season.

You’re right: life is usually wrought with those things. You persevered! That’s the key. I’m so glad you’re here!

This is my first time doing an interactive Bible study . I’ve signed up for two reasons…first learning how to keep the JOY going in this world today can be quite a challenge & a new perspective always is a help. Secondly, I was told about you & this study by my big Sis…you know her as Cathy Nason from McMinnville Or. Ofcourse being the little sister (she calls me baby sister) I just naturally want to do what she does, & sense. we can’t be together this is a really good alternative. So with a smile on my heart & face I’m ready to do this. What a great way to meet other sisters in Christ

The theme for his service and obit was he has his wings (He had Angelman Syndrome so we call them angels) and his voice (non-verbal). embroidered his and his sister and I shirts saying that and made decals for the car with a blue ribbon saying Angelman syndrome on it along with the saying and date. wanted more than just date-figured if people noticed the years and that he was only 34 they would probably think drugs and I didn’t want that. And it’s good awareness for AS. Someone may go home and google it to see what it is.

They both had had health problems but I never expected either one to go so fast. We were pretty close and I helped caring for them. I know they are no longer suffering and are in Heaven with Jesus. I just miss them so much. God has helped me feel His love through this and for that I am very thankful. I have enjoyed the Bible Study on Hope and know I will with this Joy one. Hi, my name is Wendy Theisen. I am studying from Las Vegas, NV. Two things drew me to this study And I am So Grateful that God lead me here to You!! First was that I Have Discovering Hope in the Psalms. I was led to it by Karla Dornacher. She is Fabulous and I had begun her Bible Study using this book, but I became very ill and was unable to finish that study.
The second thing that God used to lead me to this study was that I found Dr. Charles Stanley’s talks on finding Joy- using the study of Philippians. I have 2 Wonderful girlfriends who are my age 59. And there are times that we struggle to find peace and joy in the midst of difficulties. But we work to be there for each other and to use Faith in God Our Father and Jesus Christ to get us through And hold onto that Peace and Joy!
As most people, I think, I have had Challenges in my lifetime. I am So Grateful for them because I Know that God has used them to show me how Very Much He loves me! For that reason I would not wish that they had not happened!
I am currently going through health challenges, my husband and I are not sure where this path that God has us on is leading us- but we are working to Faithfully follow where God is leading us.
For the last 3 years our church has done a series of Bible Studies that we have attended, but I felt strongly that God wanted me to do a Bible Study this Summer.
That is why I am So Grateful to have been led to You and this book! I am starting late, Nothing new for me ;0)! Thank You and God Bless You.

I did the study with Karla earlier, she was wonderful, I’ve been a fan of her work for years and I needed that study so much and liked it a lot, it did my heart good. My son had died right before the study started, it couldn’t have come at a better time. When I found out about the study on joy, I knew I wanted to do it too, I haven’t been swimming in joy too much these days under the circumstances, and I’m reminded of something the Christian singer Carmon once said, as a Christian, what am I doing under the circumstances in the first place. So I ordered the book as soon as I found out about it. I need a big gulp of joy in my heart and my life and I need to start practicing keeping the joy alive in spite of the circumstances. I’ve also just today learned there is a 3rd study coming up. I pre-ordered that book today too from CBD. Thank you to all three of you for sharing what God has given you with all of us.

Two things drew me to this study. The cover of the book for one. The other is that I was recently given a word in a prayer meeting to shake off all the heaviness and receive joy. I thought this would help.

Joy is often something I forget I’m commanded to do. Especially in the hustle and bustle of life with teenagers. Sometimes just not complaining and not choosing to sit in frustration is all I can manage. But God commands me to choose joy! Joy in being the creative women he made me to be. Joy in the suffering and disappointments that come. Joy in a beautiful sunset and Joy that he is always with me.

Hi there! My name is Michelle I was born, raised and still live in West Des Moines, Iowa I have studied Philippians several times over the yrs. First time I was going thru a horrible church split and was attending a ladies Bible study at my friend’s church. That was about 2002. Ever since then, I have declared the book to be my book that I run to for strength and encouragement and precious reminders that God does love me and I CAN get through WHATEVER I must get through. I know some people have a fav life verse, which I do have many verses to fall back on. However, Philippians is my LIFE BOOK! Now, we are going thru this crazy time with the coronavirus, so many people panicy and scared, so much info in the media that is both true and so much is false. SO confusing and yet I am not in panic mode or stirred up to being scared or being caught up in the world’s way of thinking. 🙂 I am wanting to start studying from the beginning of Philippians once again to help me stay focused on what is most important. HIM! I want to stay in my NOT panic mode, there are already plenty of people doing that! On a real personal note….I want to say THANK YOU Jean for sharing briefly in your intro video about not having any children. I can relate to that sadness, loss and feelings. I have never been married, I am 55yrs old! UGG! I still dream of getting married, but the older I get, I think that possibilty is slipping just because…and yet I am still holding onto hope of being married someday. With that being said, nope, I have no children and so that has been a hard thing for me to deal with as well. Especially since my amazing mom moved to Heaven almost ten yrs ago now. I find it difficult to be able to share with someone about how now, it is really too late for me to have children even if I was married. SO, THANK YOU again, for you and the other ladies for taking the time to write and create this Bible study! I am sure it will be such a blessing to me. I have never used a Bible study book in the past that goes along with my fav book in the Bible. This will be real treat and blessing for me!

May God continue to bless you and your ministry!

She passed away in May 2014 after being diagnosed 9 months previously with Glioblastoma cancer. She was an artist, did watercolor paintings of people she loved; and her favorite verse was Philippians 4:8. This study intrigued me because it involved Philippians and creativity, and I wanted to do this in memory of my mom. I also used to love art in high school and haven’t done anything since, so coloring in the art in the book is a fun, simple way to dive back in! Thank you for your study and videos, Jean! Hello- my name is Judy and I’m studying from a northern suburb of Minneapolis, MN. Two of my dear friends and I have been reading through the Bible, one chapter at a time each morning, since June of 2016. We just came to Philippians, our 2nd time through, and at the same time, I stumbled across this study, and with a nudge from the Holy Spirit- we’re diving in. One of us is very crafty creative, one of us is also uniquely creative, and I’m a ‘creative wannabe’, so I’m looking forward to that part! As a long-time believer, I know that He has unshakeable JOY for us, regardless of our circumstances. In different seasons of hardship and sufferings, I’ve experienced degrees of this- but I want a firmer foundation and more practice at it. As we have seen in recent months how quickly and dramatically the world, the culture we live in can suddenly shift around us, I believe this is just the beginning of labor pains- I want to be practiced, ready for whatever happens next! I know that my strength comes from the joy of the Lord, and I need more strength! Loved the intro video, grateful for this ‘extra’!

We have never used anything like this so I am so excited to begin. Today will be our first session. I chose this study because the need for women to be creative is built in. What I’ve seen so far is biblically accurate and in small enough sections that anyone can do it. I’m off to begin! 💖

    Hello,

I’m Sheri, studying in Aptos, on the central coast of California.

I really loved the ‘Discovering Hope in the Psalms’ study, and got so much out of it, I’m thankful to have this study to dive into during this unusual season of hunkering down. I love the verse Phil.2:4 “… in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
    So incredibly appropriate right now.

I am studying on my own, taking my time as I do a lot of care-giving for my two grand-babies and for my father with dementia. I too love the creative aspect of these studies and love that it is incorporated into the lessons.

Yes, you’re right: that verse is so appropriate right now. We had a season of care-giving too, when Clay’s dad had dementia before he moved on to heaven. May the Lord bless you with energy, wisdom, and joy as you walk with him in this season.

Bowed joy comes literally every morning since January 2018. He was given a Duopa Pump and every morning when we hook up the pump he is given back the beauty of life. My 2nd son took over the preaching but my husband 67 years old pours out his love and wisdom to so many. I previously completed Discovering Hope with a group of ladies. Loved loved loved it. My level of joy has depleted over the last few years, after losing my mom to cancer and a precious baby though miscarriage, I just can’t seem to get back to the positive, joyous person I once was. My goal throughout this study is to allow God to restore the joy and open my heart to the healing that only he can bring!

Hi, Jennifer. Great to hear from you! I’ve heard from a number of parents who took children age 10 and older through “Discovering Hope in the Psalms,” so that should work for you and your children. There are a couple of school teachers that have used two books in their classrooms–I think “Discovering Hope in the Psalms” and “Discovering Joy in Philippians,” but I can’t find the comments so I can’t be sure. The book on Psalms will teach them about Hebrew poetry, praying the psalms, and having hope even when life is hard. The book on Philippians will teach some early church history and how to establish joy-building habits. I think both would be appropriate, but the Psalms book has more fun activities to do with children. Hope that helps!

Hello, Jean E. I attended the online version of Women in Apologetics and the gave away one of your Bible Study books. I got all three and am doing the Philippians one by myself. I LOVE IT. I started Lesson 2 this morning and then went to your website and found the online videos. I live in Houston, TX. Last Sept. 1st I fell at the end of our wonderful Viking Cruise and hurt my back. It was not my first fall, but the cumulative of falls has had me in pain since then. I went to a pain management doctor and they did several procedures over time. With each one you have to wait 6 weeks and then go to PT. After the last one, they sent me to a spinal surgeon and I had surgery on May 4th. Now over 6 weeks since surgery, I feel I was better before the surgery. So struggling with thinking I made a bad decision. I had hoped to work with the youth but that has not been possible for me physically. This study is just what I need. I have done other studies and yours is well thought out. I am at retired Certified Nurse-Midwife and was a workshop trainer for something called CenteringPregnancy, which is group prenatal care. We definitely used the same principle for learning. I have a background in apologetics (certificate course at Houston Baptist University with classes with Nancy Pearcey and Mary Jo Sharp). I have taken a number of courses with online Christianity. I am now reading your husband’s book on Evil. One other thing, I am 70 years old. I am so looking forward to the study on JOHN. And will do the other studies. Keep them coming!

The theme for our congregation to focus on this year (2024) is the idea of discover. What do we want to discover? What can we help others discover? When we discover something, what will we commit to do? This book fits in wonderfully! Since we are coming into the holiday season, it was most desirable that we focus our study time on finding JOY!
Thank you for this beautiful resource.
